Friday 16th of April
Line-up: Darren Tate, Cross, DJ Maron
Sometimes you just end up at parties, which you never had known or heard about before. Just due to a little coincidence we got two tickets for this party so me and my mate Ralph decided to check out what this "Insomnia Party" actually is. The website http://www.insomnia-events.nl looked very stylish and also the location, in the centre of Amsterdam under an old church gave us the feeling this could be a really cool party.
Entrance After a short walk through Amsterdam we arrive at the big church. We enter the building around 23.15 and walk down the stairs into the catacombs. We are welcomed by one of the hosts with a nice welcome drink and check out quite alot of area's. Because we are partying in the Catacombs, we had to check out quite a few area's before we found the dancefloor. In the meantime we also saw DJ Astrid walking around to party. The low ceiling and dark atmosphere that comes from the Catacombs gives the place a nice underground feeling. Loads of nice lights, friendly bar crew and a nice mixture of types of people gives this night a nice and easygoing atmosphere.
Uplifting Darren Tate had already kicked off with a very uplifting, typically English sounding set. Some of his own work was played and in the middle of the set it became more pounding, with The Green Martian - Ladies & Gentleman. The area was not really filled yet and some people were just chilling out and relaxing, but a good amount of people already was dancing and throwing some hands in the air here and there. I was not very impressed with Darren Tate's mixing, some downright mistakes, but his productions are absolutely fabulous and ending with Darren Tate vs Jono Grant - Let The Light Shine In gave us a true euphoric moment.
Cross Then it was time for a DJ that I heard alot about, but never heard/seen live. It was Erik de Kross, better known as DJ Cross. He played a mixture of club, trance and groovy progressive. He opened with an amazing trance track that must been from at least 1997, I don't remember the tracktitle correctly, but it was definatly cool to hear. He played some nice progressive track like Infusion - Girls Can Be So Cruel (Infusion Mix), before mixing in another pounding classic: Groovezone - Eisbaer. It's awesome when classic tracks are mixed with nowadays music and it definatly works if played right! Some chicks dressed up as nuns were standing on the stage some time, which was cool to see. Also the crew walked around with stuff to eat if you were hungry! When the end of the set was near, the music system/ speakersystem crashed and the party was stopped for like 15 minutes. Instead of the people cheering and shouting WTF is happening, everybody stayed cool, talked to Cross and waited for the music. The problem was fixed and Cross closed his set with some firmer clubtrack at the end. Well done...
Maron
Maron is the organizer of the event and plays the decks himself as well. He started off with clubby progressive to build a bridge between the sounds of Cross and the trancesounds of Maron. DJ Maron is one of those upcoming DJ's that's slowly building a name in the capital of Holland with several gigs. He will also play in Jordan next to Ferry Corsten for three hours in the desert. He also produced a track called Overdrive, which is damn catchy vocal trancetrack with a groovy/clubby elements. We heard about one hour of his set before we left and it was quite nice to listen, one of the highlights was Sonic Rush from our trance.nu user Dréas, which is still a kickass track. After an hour we had to leave and when left we were give a livemix cd of DJ Maron, which was quite a nice gift.
Conclusion + Catacombs are great to party + Friendly crew + Good atmosphere + Awesome music + Free CD & food- Sometimes the ceiling was a too low - 25 euro for a ticket is mayby a little too much
Nice underground party for those that care about intimacy and atmosphere.
